Practical Chess Experiences

Learning Chess is NOT the same as learning Math.

For math, after kids learn the knowledge, work on practice problems, and get a good score on a test. We know that they understood a concept.

That’s not the case in chess. Kids can score 100% on all the puzzles and quizzes, but still can’t win games.

How come?

Math is purely knowledge based.

If one student learned double digit multiplication, and someone else only learned addition. We know the former has more knowledge.

In chess, on the other hand, students may know about Fork or Pin, but if these themes are not applied in a given game, there’s no use.

Chess is more than knowledge-based, it requires practical experiences.

Recognizing patterns during a game when no instructions are given is much more important than just knowing a pattern.

Hence, playing games is more important than simply taking classes.

I have taught over 100s of students, and have noticed that the kids who play more games at the beginning will almost always improve faster.
